Board members Kathryn Davis and Dr. Harishini Ernest traveled to Washington, D.C. to represent TexTESOL III and advocate for important public funding and policy changes that would benefit ESL professionals and learners in Central Texas.

2014 TESOL Advocacy & Policy Summit in Washington D.C.

On June 22-24, 2014 Karen Green joined over 60 other members of TESOL International Association in Washington, DC for the 2014 TESOL Advocacy & Policy Summit. In its ninth year, the program featured a full a day of issue briefings and activities around education legislation and advocacy, followed by a day of visits to Congressional offices on Capitol Hill. With representatives from approximately 25 US affiliates in attendance, the goals of Advocacy Day were not only to lobby on key issues for TESOL, but also to provide an interactive learning experience for participants on elements of advocacy. By the end of the event, TESOL members had visited the offices of over 100 Representatives and Senators.

The Texas State Intensive English (TSIE) program at Texas State University in San Marcos was pleased to send two of its staff to the 2014 Puerto Rico TESOL event in Ponce on November 14 and 15. Rosario Davis and Dr. Martha Kwon presented “Assess Your Assessment” to attendees in a workshop that encouraged ESL instructors to systematically design courses based on assessments that address student learning outcomes with accountability.
